Myrtle Beach Participates in Golf Event for Alzheimer's
A golf tournament July 14 at River Oaks Golf Plantation on raised about $7,000 to help fight Alzheimer's and provide financial assistance to those affected by the disease in Georgetown and Horry counties.
"There are currently 70,000 people living with Alzheimer's in South Carolina and about 5.1 million nationwide. An event like this is a very special moment when you see so many caring people turn out for such a worthy cause," said Ashton Baker, director of development for the Alzheimer's Association of S.C.
"And this is a devastating disease which is affecting more people each year as the baby boomers approach the risk age, which is 65."
Regency Healthcare Executive Director Joyce Calabrese served as tournament committee chairwoman.
"We are partnering with Myrtle Beach Manor to have this tournament for raising funds for the Alzheimer's association.
"I've been involved for the last six years, but in running the golf tournament for last three years," said Calabrese, who witnessed her husband's aunt struggle with the disease for 12 years. "Also, being a nurse, I have dealt with many people affected by Alzheimer's."
Nancy Vickowanich, chairwoman for two fundraisers, said, "It's a great event and the monies raised here stay in the area to help the families that have Alzheimer's." Vickowanich who lost her mother to the disease and has worked with the association for three years. "This was my way of being able to honor my mom and raise funds to hopefully, someday, eliminate Alzheimer's."
